 Kokomo Civic Theatre

Kokomo Civic TheatreThe Kokomo Civic Theatre collection is composed of two collections: Scanned copies of each playbill available from every production, and scrapbook memorabilia collected over the years by members of the Kokomo Civic Theatre organization. Most of the records were borrowed, digitized, and returned, allowing the original records to remain in the owner’s possession. This season marks the Kokomo Civic Theatre’s 65th season of existence, and we wanted to make sure their legacy was captured and preserved for the community they have so wonderfully served.

In the late 1940’s a group of part-time students at Indiana University Extension (as IUK was known then), with the help of their instructor, Milton Green, conceived the idea of establishing a community theatre. They called it Kokomo Little Theatre.

After several years of producing skits and one-act plays, all performed on a non-existent budget, they were gaining in skill and community recognition. By 1949, they decided to launch into full scale production of full-length plays. In April 1950, on the Kokomo High School stage, Kokomo Civic Theatre was born with the production of Claudia.

Over the years, hundreds of people have participated in the various aspects of production both on stage as well as backstage. Local actors, actresses, musicians, choreographers, and technicians responsible for lighting, sound, costumes, prop, and set production have joined playbill creators, ushers, publicists, advertising solicitors and clean-up crew to forge a strong and talented organization. Business and personal donors from the community are also a large part of the success of the Kokomo Civic Theatre.

Kokomo Civic Theatre’s Articles of Incorporation state in part that KCT will “encourage the field of drama, music, and literature, encouraging the participation of the community, giving all members of the community the opportunity to express a community interest and a means of expression through entertainments and theatrical presentations.” They plan on continuing this tradition of excellence as long as they have an audience.

Check out their website or Facebook page for dates and titles of the next production.
